"Thinning The Herd"

Tom Bell, Publisher/Editor of The Salina Journal, wrote a most unpleasant editorial in the edition of May 16, 2006, titled:

"Get at root of deer problem
The herd is too big; we'll have safer roads when we do what's needed to cull the population"

The editorial pooh-poohs various non-violent ways of addressing the deer population, then comes up with this chilling paragraph:

"It is long past time to dramatically reduce deer herds through whatever means at our disposal, including placing bounties on deer, expanding hunting seasons, or even organizing large-group hunts that "drive" deer to kill zones or traps."

The editorial concludes:

"New signs, fences and high-tech sensors are good ideas. However, it is time to take solutions one step further."

Substitute the word "Jew" for "deer", and we're back in the 30's and 40's again.

My letter to the editor, below.

UPDATE: Letter published, May 22, 2006.

Dear Editor,

By golly, you've come up with the solution for many of society's problems!

We have a serious unemployment problem in the US--good paying jobs are being outsourced and sent overseas.

Time to "thin the herd".

There's too much oil being consumed, with the result that our future is being sold for short-term gratification.

Time to "thin the herd".

Housing is too expensive, too many people wanting a part of the American Dream.

Time to "thin the herd".

Too many "uppity" people in other countries wanting control of their oil, their natural resources, their destiny?

Time to "thin the herd".

Yes, there are many other solutions to the problems that confront our world, solutions that reflect humanity at its best rather than at its worst.

But human history is coated with the blood of innocents. No reason to stop now. So let us not do something that would help make this world a better place to live in, something that would reflect gentleness and mercy-in this case a deer population reduction program involving the equivalent of spaying and neutering, just as civilized cities do with cats and dogs. No, let's just go in with guns and start killing. That will certainly teach the next generation what being human is all about.

Although I understand Kansas has a little school finance problem. Too many children wanting an education.

Look out kids, Tom Bell may want to thin your herd too!

Sincerely,

Terry L. Clark
