Different Cities, Different Importance Of Schools

In Salina Kansas, the local church is closing Sacred Heart Grade School, with no serious outcry. See, for example, The Salina Journal's editorial of June 2, 2006.

In Eureka California, when faced with the possible closure of St. Bernard's school:


Redwood Capital Bank offered a free account and supporters of the strapped St. Bernard's schools hope community members will be generous in helping them raise $500,000 soon.

Following an earlier announcement that officials would need to decide by May 31 whether the private schools would be in business for the 2006-07 school year, parents, alumni and supporters began brainstorming on how to close the slightly more than $600,000 budget gap -- and quickly.
