Uh, the "insurgency" began and grew as it became increasingly apparent that the U.S. was going to attack Iraq, occupy it, and steal its' oil.

And this began before the US invasion formally began in March, 2003, notwithstanding Dickhead's proclamation that, "I really do believe that we will be greeted as liberators."
