LA Law: The Fix Is Always In (Mel Gibson)

Calif. Judge Hails Mel Gibson's Progress

A judge praised Mel Gibson on Friday for maintaining his court-ordered treatment for alcoholism following his drunken-driving arrest last July.

The 51-year-old actor-director didn't attend the progress report hearing, but Gibson's attorney, Blair Berk, told the judge she filed a report with the court saying Gibson was complying with all the terms and conditions of his rehabilitation program.

"He's doing very well. He's working hard," Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob, told The Associated Press on Friday. "This is just an ongoing process that he's committed to."

Gibson pleaded no contest to charges of drunken driving Aug. 17 under a deal that included serving three years' probation, a fine and alcohol-rehabilitation classes.

Yes, it's not just the cops that give the stars a pass when it comes to responsibility.

Without tracking down the various articles (those interested can do a Google search), suffice it to say that Gibson's public utterances (and private utterances made public) since his arrest make rather clear that, even if Gibson has not been caught drinking, he shows all the mannerisms of a dry drunk.

However, it would be fair to say that Gibson's gentle treatment is typical of the US judicial system, in which DUIs are nothing more than a cash cow for the government. Jump through the hoops, go down a checklist, don't look behind the curtain, and most important of all, pay your fines and fees. Pay no attention to the continuing carnage on the highways.
