Slaughter Of Heroes

The SF Chronicle carried a very touching wire service article about a dog who gave his life in the service of others. My letter to the Chronicle and other publications:

Dear Editor:

It is quite fortunate that Jesse, who saved Jamie Henson's life and died trying to save the life of his feline companion, found his forever home with Jamie. Otherwise Jesse, a golden retriever-German shepherd mix for whom there was no breed-specific Rescue group, would almost certainly have been murdered without a second thought at any of the thousands of government-run and government-sanctioned kill facilities throughout America.

What sort of country slaughters millions of Jesses every year because they are "inconvenient"? The same country that kills hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who get in the way of that country's likewise selfish insistence on controlling oil for its own convenience.

Sincerely,

Terry L. Clark
