Senator Leahy (Momentarily) Gets A Clue

The FIB’s trying to get investigative journalist Jack Anderson’s papers (Jack died December 17, 2005). At a recent Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, there was this exchange:

Leahy asked Deputy Assistant Attorney General Matthew Friedrich if the FBI was looking for any documents dealing with the personal life of J. Edgar Hoover, the late FBI director and a prominent target of Anderson's scrutiny.

Friedrich declined to answer and repeatedly rebuffed other queries from the committee, prompting Leahy to accuse him of "basically taking the Fifth Amendment" to avoid answering questions.

"You should be ashamed of yourself, or your superiors should be ashamed of themselves," Leahy said. "Is there any questions you guys are allowed to answer other than your title (or the) time of day?"
